Alligatoring is a type of paint film failure in which the surface develops a cracked pattern with deep relief, resembling a reptile's skin.Checking is a similar failure, but it is less severe and is characterized by long, fairly evenly spaced cracks in the paint film, having shallow relief or depth.

Fixing paint runs on walls. It happens to more people than you’d think. You walk into the room as the new paint is slowly drying, only to discover a patch, or paint bubbles, or drip stains flowing down the walls. Some of these mistakes can also happen when painting something that isn’t a wall, like painting light fixtures. These need fixing, fast. Often, small things can make an adequate paint job look bad. Paint dribbles, overspray on windows, sloppy trim painting and uneven borders at the ceiling line are small details that can detract from the overall finished look of a room but can be fixed easily. Even something large, like a bad paint choice, can be reworked without a complete. When painting a woodworking project, cabinets, or wood trim, paint drips are a common problem, and they can be especially frustrating when they dry before you notice them. Paint drips are usually caused by applying too much paint to your project in a single coat, typically from an overloaded paintbrush.Gravity causes the excess paint to run, and as it begins to dry, the paint congeals in. If you notice a paint run on your wall, don’t panic. Fortunately, it is possible to repair a paint run without painting the entire wall. Prevent a Run. Prevent these paint problems by applying paint in thin layers and smoothing drips and runs while they are still wet. Make sure nails or picture hangers are removed from the wall.

Keep external walls, including the pointing and the paintwork, in good condition. Seal the gaps around window and door frames. Clear out or cut drip grooves below windowsills. It’s fine to use paint-and-primer-in-one mixes if the old surface was previously painted, is in good shape, and has a flat (non-glossy) finish. But if you’re painting over a more difficult surface such as plaster, wood, concrete, glossy paint, or stained/porous drywall, use a stand-alone primer or a premium all-in-one mix specifically. It is easy to repair a paint mishap, whether you need to tidy up a paint job you have just completed or fix a previous paint problem. Do-it-yourselfers often struggle with the most intricate parts of painting a room, namely around doorways and trims and keeping a neat line where the wall meets the ceiling. Some walls are so bad that the best fix is to tear them out and install new drywall. Wall liner is the next-best fix. It's basically extra-thick, paintable wallpaper that acts as a big patch over the whole wall. Some versions are smooth; some have a textured or patterned surface.

A few dried paint drips on natural trim can make a whole room look shabby. But you don’t need to strip the woodwork to get rid of them. You can remove paint drips—and the streaks of old paint that make edges of trim so hard to repaint—just by scraping, even if the paint has been dry for years. The best way to paint plaster walls that have an uneven texture is to use self-leveling paint. Self-leveling paint helps to eliminate brush strokes, creating a smooth, hard finish. It may cost a bit more, but it's worth it. Patching Problems. I filled a small hole in the wall and painted over it. That patch is showing through the paint. To fix them, wait until the paint has dried, then scrape the drips off the wall with a paint scraper and sand the area smooth. Repaint the section carefully, blending it in with the rest of the wall. The reasons for peeling paint are varied—dirty walls that have been painted, excess moisture, improper prep, latex paint on top of oil paint—but you can fix the problem. Read up on what the EPA has to say about lead paint before you proceed with your project. Homes built prior to 1978 may have lead-based paint.

Paint on the Ceiling. You can use a window cleaner solution and a clean paintbrush to wipe off the paint if you notice the mistake while the paint is still wet. On the other hand, touch up with a small brush and matching ceiling paint once the paint has dried. Paint Runs and Drips. Let the paint dry. Time to Paint. Allow 60-minutes work time per gallon of paint - plus one hour to get underway and clean-up. Painting burns about 360 calories an hour. Plastic grocery and trash bags are a boon to painting. Have plenty on hand. Put one over the paint roller tray before you start. When done, turn inside out and throw away. Your tray will stay. How to Remove Paint Drips After They Have Been Painted. When you paint a wall, it’s invariably an attempt to make a room look better. While it isn’t difficult to achieve this end, simple. Solution: If the paint is still wet, try to dab or wipe with a damp cloth to remove the mess. Otherwise, allow the paint to dry completely, lightly sand the problem area, remove the dust with a cloth, and then touch up with a clean brush and paint. Preparation Is the Key to Fixing Paint Mistakes on Walls. Mistakes happen.
