Gee S Bend Quilters Framed Art

In the fall of 2014, twenty Gee's Bend quilts were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation from its William S. Arnett Collection, allowing the Metropolitan to represent this important quilting tradition in their collection, and further establishing the quilters as part of the art historical canon.

The Arnetts, longtime devotees of African-American vernacular art, are credited with bringing the quilts of Gee's Bend to the larger world after coming across a photograph nine years ago. In 2002, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, presented an exhibition of 70 quilts from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The story goes that art collector William Arnett came across a photograph of one of the quilts while working on a history of African American vernacular art. He set out to find the quilt, and its maker, and arrived in Gee’s Bend. Anna Williams died. Anna was Gee’s Bend before Gee’s Bend. By that I mean she was perhaps the first African American quilter whose improvisational quilts were publicly recognized as art – discovered, applauded, and promoted by the mainstream quilt world. During the 1990s, Anna enjoyed an international reputation as an art quilter. And in Gee’s Bend it takes a village to create a body of art work spanning five generations. The quilts created by the women of Gee’s Bend have gone from beds to museums and gallery walls in less than a decade thanks to the dedication and selfless commitment of one family -- the Arnetts of Atlanta, Georgia.

The first movement, Housetop, takes its name from a popular quilting pattern often used as a point of departure by the Gee's Bend quilters. In my Housetop, winding melodies are framed by striped syncopated grooves, patterned triadic chords and Jimi Hendrix-like psychedelic guitar riffs colored with fuzz box and distortion.
