By deliberately painting against the tape, you seal the edge with the first color, allowing it to bleed under the edge, so the second color can't do it. The edge of the tape becomes the edge of your line. Make sure the lower edge of the paint feathers softly away so you won't see a thick edge of paint later on.

Get sharp edge when painting textured walls. When you need to create super sharp paint lines ScotchBlue 2090EL-36E is the painter's tape to choose. You can apply this painters tape to baseboards, window trim, over hinges on cabinets, to glass surfaces, to metal surfaces, and just about anywhere you want to protect from the possibility of paint contact. Use painter's tape to mask off all trim and edges. Use the 1 inch (2.5 cm) blue tape made specifically for use with painting. The secret here is to tape slowly and carefully, making sure to press down firmly along the edge of the tape so that it is attached securely. Using regular masking tape can cause the trim paint to pull up and you may be stuck repainting trim. I had a couple of spots to dab at with a make-up wedge, but that was it! I prefer Frog Tape to the blue stuff, but it looks like there’s been a run on it everyplace around here, so I made do with blue tape. I think that and the fact that my walls are textured, makes it difficult to get a perfect seal along the edge of the tape. The edger works wonders holding the brush the exact distance from the edge, making sure you get razor-sharp edges, time after time. The brush is adjustable (in and out), letting you work with textured walls, including but not limited to orange peel and knockdown textures.

If interior painting is on the list of home to-do's, you might want to consider paint edging. The practice involves bringing paint to the edge of ceilings, trim, or wall junctions. The best part? You keep razor-sharp lines and avoid drips more than you would with most painting methods. How to Paint Straight Lines on Textured Walls. Though applying a new paint color to the walls can provide a room with an instant and inexpensive face-lift, painting textured walls can be difficult. And while our painter guy was here, we sorta eavesdropped on his technique. While he was taping walls off and painting ceilings, and painting one wall different from the next, we were curious about how he was getting such STRAIGHT lines on our textured walls. So we asked. And he told us the “painter’s secret’s”. My walls are lightly textured and if this makes any difference, the original surface under most of the walls is plaster and lathe (with the exception of the wall being painted green, which is drywall). The surface I will actually be painting over will be the previous coating of yellow semi-gloss paint that is about 20 years old.

Paint over the edge of the tape with the color already on the wall (or whatever you're painting). So, if you're creating yellow stripes on a white wall, reach for the white paint first. Hi Jeff, just read your tutorial about painting straight lines near the ceiling. Yor advice is spot on! I’ve been very busy painting the whole inside of my house. Back in 1989, we purchased our house and I put up wallpaper on the lower edge of my dining room walls, and my foyer, and the den. I also had chair rail above the papered edge. Try to get just the tips of the angled brush right where wall and ceiling meet. The angled brush will help paint a perfect line. Method #3: Ceiling Line Paint Tool If you’re new to painting a room, having a ceiling painting pad tool will help you paint a perfect line easily. An update from the comments section: If you have textured walls, use caulking to seal the tape and you lines will be straight!!) To start, use a ruler to make your registration marks. My stripes are 8″ wide, so I made a little mark with a pencil 8″ above the floor board, every 18″ or so around the wall of the closet, making sure to mark.

When painting textured walls—or any walls, really—apply a coat of primer to the wall in “W” shaped strokes for maximum coverage, starting with the top left corner and moving down. Let cure. And now you paint the wall just like you would with any other wall. With textured surfaces you want to use longer nap roller so that the paint can get into the crevasses. But basically you just take it and start roll in, cut in pretty close in a W shape, and just keep head lie down on the wall. Getting that precise, straight line on edges of a wall or where the wall meets ceiling is one of the hardest parts of painting. It's even worse if you have textured walls or ceilings. Instead of painting along the line right from the start, work your way up to it using a gradual approach. This means using a crescent-shaped motion to run the paint near the edge at first. Then on your next stroke get a little closer. Let the strokes get a little closer each time without reloading the paint brush.
